Check your local ordinances to make sure chicken-keeping is allowed, and what the parameters are.
Note that many HOAs can overrule city or county ordinances.
- Ensure you have enough space for your flock
We recommend 3–4 square feet per chicken of room in the coop and 8–10 square feet in the run per bird. We also recommend having a minimum of 3–4 birds, as chickens are highly social animals.
- Keep your coop clean and tidy
We recommend using hemp bedding, as it is the best for moisture and odor control. Spot clean soiled bedding every 1-2 days; fully clean out your coop every few weeks, or every few months if you are following the Deep Litter Method.
- Install predator proof fencing around your coop and run
If you are in an area prone to aerial attacks, cover your run with a roof. To deter ground pests, RentACoop offers easy-to-install electric fencing.
- Collect eggs daily, or every couple of days
Roll away nesting boxes make egg collection clean and easy and discourage egg eating.
- Visit with your flock daily
Chickens are social animals and love their humans!
- Stave off boredom
Provide access to enrichment, particularly in the winter when chickens spend more time indoors.
- Promptly clean up any spilled food, and ensure your birds always have access to clean fresh water
