Electric fencing 101

Your strongest first line of defense

Predators often test an ordinary fence until they find a way through, under, or over it. Electric fencing adds a safe, memorable deterrent that helps teach foxes, raccoons, coyotes, and other unwanted visitors to keep their distance.

It gives your flock more room to roam while helping protect the space around them.

  • Flexible for different setups

How electric fencing works

Three parts. One working system.

Each piece has a different job, and all three work together to create the electrical circuit.

  1. FenceCreates the boundary.
  2. EnergizerSends the electrical pulse.
  3. Grounding rodCompletes the circuit.

You need all three for the electric fence to work properly.

Why grounding matters

The circuit that makes it work

An electric fence works as a circuit. When an animal touches the energized fence, the pulse travels through the animal, into the soil, through the grounding rod, and back to the energizer.

No grounding rod = no complete circuit

Grounding performance can vary with soil conditions. Dry, sandy, or rocky ground may require additional grounding support.

Field questions

Summer Security Event FAQ

What is the difference between electric and non-electric fencing?

Non-electric fencing creates a visible physical boundary. Electric fencing is designed to add an electrical deterrent when it is correctly paired with compatible equipment and installed according to the product instructions. Compare the intended animals, included components and installation requirements on each product page.

Do electric fence products require an energizer?

An electric fence requires a compatible energizer and proper installation to be electrified. Some sets may include an energizer while fence-only listings may not. Review the “what’s included” details and requirements on the individual product page before purchasing.

Can the fencing be moved and reconfigured?

Some products in this event are intended for portable or flexible setups, but movement and reconfiguration depend on the specific product, ground conditions and installation. Check each product’s specifications and instructions before moving an installed fence.

Which fencing is intended for goats?

Start with the Electric Anti-Predator Goat Fence listing, which is presented for goats and larger animals. Confirm the listed dimensions, energizer requirements, animal suitability and installation guidance on its product page for your particular setup.

How do I determine how much fencing I need?

Measure the planned perimeter, account for gate access and note terrain or obstacles before choosing a configuration. Compare those measurements with the dimensions and setup guidance on the product page. When in doubt, contact RentACoop support before ordering.

Are all products on this page discounted by 30%?

No. The Summer Security Event offers up to 30% off select products. A sale indicator appears here only when Shopify provides a compare-at price greater than the current price. Current prices and offer details shown on each individual product page are the source of truth.
