Good Eggs or Bad?
Reaching into your nesting boxes only to find eggs that are cracked, broken open, or covered in poop is disappointing and frustrating. 😕
Some common causes of messy, broken eggs:
-
Nest Box Size - A nest box that is too small or too shallow may result in broken eggs from the hens stepping on or pecking the eggs while settling into a comfortable laying position.
-
Nest Box Placement - Nesting boxes that are placed at or above the level of the roosting bars (or in coops without roosting bars) become an inviting place for chickens to sleep. And where you have sleeping chickens, you have chicken poop.
-
Chicken Health – Chickens who are unwell will sometimes sleep in nesting boxes (or on the floor) instead of on roosts, no matter where the boxes are positioned in the coop. *Dirty eggs caused by loose stool can also be a sign of internal parasites or other illnesses.
-
Coop Hygiene - Dirty coop floors, roosting bars, or nesting boxes with soiled litter leads to dirty feet that can transfer poop and other ick to otherwise clean eggs. 🤢
✨Pro tip: It is recommended to provide one laying box for every 4-5 hens. We know that multiple hens will often favor and take turns laying eggs in the same one or two boxes every day, however it is important to provide an adequate number of nesting boxes to reduce competition for space and crowding that can lead to broken eggs.
The 5 Second Rule Does NOT Apply
When eggs are cracked or broken, either in the nesting box or on the coop floor, they become fair game for your hungry hens. Once your flock gets a taste of what’s inside an egg, they may even go after eggs that are intact. And soon, you could be dealing with an egg-eating habit. 🐔🥚
Roll-out nesting boxes, also known as roll-away nesting boxes, are the number one solution for preventing egg-eating. And it’s a LOT easier to prevent egg-eating than it is to correct it once the habit has formed!
Both the RentACoop Nesting Box Efficiency and RentACoop Nesting Box Suite feature an extra-large roll out egg tray. The gently sloped trays guide freshly laid eggs out of reach of dirty feet and curious beaks.
✅ Roll-out nesting boxes remove the temptation and decrease the ability for an egg-eating habit to form.
