DIY Medium 4-Port Chick and Chicken Feeder Kit

I purchased this product from RentACoop after watching a YouTube video on how to make a DIY chicken feeder with a 5 gallon bucket. The YouTube channel host had been using their products and showed how easy the setup was as well as the positive thoughts that went into the design. I would definitely purchase this product again. I would recommend RentACoop brand as well.

This is great! The drill makes it really easy, and now I have a feeder for when I have to put a chicken in solitary!

I was hoping they had a bigger opening.

They aren't quite big enough for an adult bird, So i've had to modify them in order for them to get to the feed. The ones they sold that were part of the metal containers were perfect, don't know why they quit selling those feeders.

Absolutely love this product! My chickens all love it. We had a flash flood warming. The bucket I had the food it was only covered a foot over by the roof. None of the food got wet!

I am thrilled that my chickens are no longer tossing food all over the ground, which goes to waste because they don’t eat very much of it up when that happens.

Now the food stays in the container, which happens to be a 5 gallon bucket, and there’s no more waste and no more battling over food.

I can’t stress enough how wonderful this product is if you have chickens. So far I haven’t had any mice try to get the food, but it is elevated off the ground so I’m sure that helps. But, there is a little panel that you can close at night to protect the food if needed.

I have friends who have bought knock offs and are so disappointed that they don’t work as advertised. I always stress to them that they have to get their items from RentACoop!!

Added 4 into a 5 gallon bucket. Works great. I like it that it has a plate where you can close the opening. No more wasted feed.

I used these in a 5gal bucket I already had. Cutting made a mess, but it worked. I just wish the came with suggestions on how high off the bottom to place these. I seem to have put them too close together and too close to the bottom so the feed doesn't flow unless I shake the bucket at least once a day. Now that the chicks will be moving to hen feed I will have to get another bucket and try staggering the height of the holes. Overall these are great, I just had a learning experience.

This is fabulous and is exactly what I was searching for to make a waterer and feeder for chickens. Easy to follow instructions and solid product! Will definitely purchase again!

No chicken food being wasted

This product works well. It doesn’t leak the food out everywhere. We put it in a 35 gallon trash bin

The chics do great but I had ducklings as well. Ducks go between water and food constantly which clogs up the eating spot with hard feed (wet turned dry). Chics can peck through it. Ducklings it’s harder to eat through it.

It’s hard to find a great company that makes a great product!

I have 8 week old pullets right now and the food holes are too small even for them. I know by the time they're full size there's no way these will work well. Shocked at that, because very few reviews mention this..but I'm definitely upgrading to the larger size to make it easier for them to eat.

I love that the small opening prevents birds from sticking head in & suffocating. Easy to diy, great at preventing feed waste & keeping feed dry. Rent a coop makes great products & has excellent customer service!

Second purchase same as first easy to install in any 5 gallon bucket we purchased twist off water proof lids chickens never run out of food and we don’t fill every day

I bought these, followed directions and installed on my container. Overall, they are as described. I was a little disappointed in the back ring of the bulkhead, as this part seemed to be a little on the light side. It did screw on and should work for installation as described. I was disappointed in the access to the grains for my chickens. It seems that as they would eat, the open area started getting grain fines or dust from the chickens pecking in that area trying to eat. It seems that the grain would not drop down the way it should, to keep the area replenished for the chickens. I tried cutting a larger hole in one, but that led to an excess of grains and the chickens started throwing it on the pen floor again. I am going to try and put a slant in the feeder to force the grains toward the feeder point, hoping it works better. I like the idea, but so far it is not working for me as hoped.

I currently have around 35 full grown chickens of various breeds. I put 8 of these medium feeder ports around the bottom of a plastic barrel so I wouldn't have to refill their 30 pound feeders so often. My observations. After a few days they did use them more than their initial reaction, but in general the holes are too small to adequately feed them. It's not that they didn't have enough space. They just didn't use it even when they were hungry. I kept it out for about a week to force them to eat from it but afterwards when I put out my normal feeders they went crazy like they were extremely hungry.. So long story short. I wouldn't recommend the medium size ports for full size chickens. I will be able to just cut the holes slightly bigger and that should work so I won't return as I don't like doing returns.
Another consideration is the type of feed you're using. They might be fine for whole grain type feed but the ground feed I use seems to clog at the bottom of the ports and so it leaves a divot under each hole making it tough for the birds to get at the feed. If unground grain were used it might backfill better and solve this problem somewhat but I haven't tried that yet.

The feeder ports do as RentACoop claims. They do reduce food waste, but they're unnecessary.

I used them for a week before I started giving my chicks treats. Each time I came with treats, the flock swarmed to me as though starving, so I decided to remove the food ports to obverse their eating habit.

1) they still treat swarmed
2) they ate spill-free with the naked 3in hole

The feeder ports are pointless in my opinion. Honestly, I like the naked hole better because...

1) while I used the ports, I had to shake the bucket for the food to stay under the holes
2) shaking it caused food spillage
3) since the birds can stick their head into the bucket, they can reach for the center of the pile and stay fed without me shaking the food into eating range

There is one con to the naked bucket hole... you can't fill it up, but honestly, I never filled my feeding bucket all the way up because I kept having to shake the food to get under the feeder holes.

I will be designing a better feeder for my flock.

I bought these since I am currently raising 70 meat chickens and the smaller feeders aren't able to keep up with the amount of feed. The larger "made for chicken feeders" are expensive! These are perfect, easy to install, keep feed waste to a minimum, and the chickens figured it out quickly.
