RentACoop Small Chicken Treat Dispenser
Easy-to-assemble chicken entertainment toy that dispenses treats through adjustable holes. Customers said chickens quickly learn to use it and "love it!" However, some noted concerns: holes can be too large causing treats to empty quickly, and the red screw caps frequently twist off and get lost. Praised for durability and keeping chickens entertained.
Our chickens love this treat dispenser!!
I added wooden craft beads to the dispenser to keep the tubes from moving too close to the chicken run wall (see picture). The beads also keep the tubes slightly apart. I had the wooden beads left over from a prior project where we built a chicken swing. I had purchased an assorted pack at Michaels near me for that project and it was enough for both projects.
Do not bring the treats in a bag to refill the dispensers or the chickens will tear a whole in it or take it away from you. I now have plastic bowls with lids (old salsa, feta cheese, or cottage cheese containers) to take the treats to the chicken run. I pinch the sides of the bowl to fill the dispenser. Another option would be to fill a water bottle to transport the treats to the chicken run.
This clever invention from Rent A Coop has been a great addition to our quail coop (see photos). 5 stars, quail approved. It keeps them entertained as they can self-dispense their BSFL treats throughout the day after I hand feed as much as they want to eat in the AM. For our 16 full grown quail, this will last on average one day, so I fill it 1-2x/day, depending on how hungry they are, but YMMV. I’ll be ordering another one for the other coop as our covey grows. Super easy to mount to the wooden frame of the coops with two stainless screws. I really appreciate how sturdy this was designed and made. As far as filling, I keep their treats in a large Rubberm*de cereal storage container, pop the whole lid off, and scoop the dispenser tubes through the treats until full. Super quick and easy. I also highly recommend the Rent a Coop horizontal water nipples, what a game changer for keeping the birds healthy and hydrated with almost no fuss or maintenance! Thank you Rent a Coop!
The chickens love it, but the red knob keeps getting twisted off and getting lost.
This was easy to put together, and the chickens learned quickly how to use it. It came with two different ends where the treat comes out. The problem is even the smallest holes are too large, and the seed ours out of it too quickly.
Easy to use and the girls had fun!
My chickens love it! It didn't take them long to figure out how to make the treats drop
I really appreciate this company for providing durable feeders, waterers, and now this fun toy. Thank you for sharing what works on your farm with all of us.
As soon as I walk by this treat dispenser my chickens go nuts! They love their worms and this makes it fun!
This was so simple to set up and it’s easy entertainment for the chickens and easy entertainment for me as I watch them! Love that it’s simple to move around and not a permanent location so I can put it in or out of their enclosed run. Highly recommend! The tubes have two different caps each that have different sized holes to dispense the treats. It’s perfect for different sized treats!
Our chickens love this. Good toy to keep them interested not bored
It's nice that they can't just inhale their bugs now...
The girls love it! My only issue is I repeatedly have to find one of the red screw cap pieces on the end. Last time I lost it for a week and finally found it in the coop. Currently it's missing again and I can't seem to buy the little end piece I need to keep the tubes on. Other than that it's great! I ended up putting some of the hintastic treats in it and I don't have to worry about it. If I ever find it I'm going to glue it on!
This product is great for keeping my chickens busy. I like to try and find things to keep them from getting too bored and pecking each other, they love this and keeps them busy for a while!
My chickens love to get treats in this toy. There are two different dispensing options. One cap has a single larger opening which works well with larger dried mealworms. The other cap has 3 smaller holes in it which work great for dispensing black soldier fly larva. When I installed it, I envisioned the chickens pecking it so it would swing and treats would sprinkle out, but they seem so prefer pecking underneath at the openings. Sometimes a few treats fall out and sometimes the tubes get a little swing and a few pieces come out. I raised the toy a little from the height I originally had placed it so they could use it the way they prefer. To get it ready, I have found it is easiest to slide the treat tube on the metal bar with the treat opening up, and then gently rotate the tube down. That limits the treats that come out while setting it up. My only wish was that the little endcap that screws on had an opening on only one side so it wouldn't screw past the end of the cap.
This definitely let me know who was the smartest in the flock. Some caught on to pecking right away, some took a while, and a few have yet to figure it out and just piggyback when the others peck it. Used for mealworms and the smaller-hole lid, makes them work at it a little longer. They love it! I wish there was a version with bigger containers rather than just higher quantity of them, to make refills easier. I will probably buy another one soon for a second location across the run, that way the flock can disperse instead of all fighting at one station.
Our hens love these! They stand underneath them when we are filling them lol. We fill with dried wormies :)
Great toy to entertain the girls, only wish the holes were smaller some of the treats I put in fall out a lot easier
This is not an every day item, but great while we were on vaca for our chicken-tender (sitter ;) ) to fill and the chicks peck around to knock the grubs and scratch. Rarely used, but glad I have it. Was a little pricy for an item that’s cumbersome to fill, and not quick/easy IMO
I'm going to leave my original review below but wanted to amend that after I posted that the toy broke in less than a day, RentACoop contacted me and sent replacement pieces right away. The screw cap that had broken off is replaced and the toy works perfectly now. Excellent customer service and thanks RAC for fixing my issue.
Original post: I'm trying to figure out how, but this toy broke in half a day. It was simple to put together and the chickens figured it out/gave them some entertainment but when I just checked on them, one of the screw caps was off and 2 tubes were on the ground. My coop is predator proof so it wasn't that and my chickens are young (only 3 mos old) and not too aggressive. Really bummed. I'll try to find some way to cap the end so I can keep using it. :-/
My girls love to play-and-peck with this product. A "naughty" member of the flock pecked at me trying to unscrew the end cap to refill the tubes (after the very first use!), and I ended up without the cap - possibly lost forever in the chicken run! Customer service responded almost instantly and saved the day by selling a set of two caps - whew! Fun and unique toy, especially for a house-bound, cabin fever flock waiting for the snow to melt so they can free range again.
