I initially purchased a watering system that automatically refills water cups, but I faced persistent leaks between the T connector and the cups. Despite attempts to fix these issues by cementing and adjusting the O-rings, nothing worked.

I then decided to try this nipple adapter, which fit perfectly with my existing system already set up in the coop. One major drawback of my initial setup was that the watering bowls were too large and positioned too low. As a result, the quails frequently perched on them, creating a mess and displacing the cups, which caused continuous water flow. This led to soggy bedding that attracted numerous flies.

Just got it installed.. ended up having to use a water jug.. the first 2 things didn't work out and it was going into a crate so not much room for a 3-5 gal bucketHope it works and doesn't leek all over.. I'll check on them shortly.. it looks like they learned how to used it quickly.

Chicken waterers are expensive!! I took some ice cream buckets and fit these into the bucket just like the big 5 gal bucket original. I kept having chicks dump the water in the broader. This saved the mess.
I used these for 5 week old chicks and 2 day old chicks. There is a little learning curve for the chicken and you have to show them how to get the water. They WILL catch on. I think the babies are learning faster than the 5 week olds.
I have the original bucket with these water nipples out in the run and the big girls figured it out super fast.
Note**the red nipples need to be at eye level to help them learn.
Best part, clean water now always available, no dumping with a wet mess.

TL;DR, they tell you to use a drill bit that is too small - you should use a 3/8" or 9mm brad point bit only, or select a competitor's product with a better design.

The idea behind this product is great, unfortunately some of the elements of the design and especially the instructions have led to me to waste two expensive food-grade buckets. If I hadn't trusted the instructions, I may not have wasted money on cracked and leaky buckets. Want to buy me some new buckets, RentACoop? Read on for warnings and better instructions than provided with this product....

Problem is this: they tell you to use a too-small drill bit. The threaded bit of the nipple is conic in shape and measures 11/32" at the narrowest part and 13/36" at the widest part. If you use a 5/16 or 11/32 drill bit, you will have to force these nipples into your holes and put too much pressure on the plastic of your bucket around the holes, leading soon to cracks like the picture I provided, and leaks, which means you will have to throw your bucket away and start over. The proper sized drill bit for these is either 3/8" or 9mm. Additionally, a standard twist drill will leave a ragged hole in your bucket, likely contributing to the cracking problem. Instead, you should use a brad-point drill bit for cleaner holes. Additionally, a better design would include a nut to be applied to the exposed threads once the nipple is installed - some competitors have this feature, and means you don't have to have such a tight hole for screwing in the nipples, also reducing the chances of cracking and leaking.

Got tired if my chickens knocking the old watering cups off and losing 55 gallons of water. So I was originally only going to use 6 nipples and decided to go with all 12 nipples. Used 1 1/2" pvc pipe. Spaced 6" on center. Now my 25+ chickens can have more opportunities to drink. Drilled my hole a screwed each nipple in. When winter comes I will install a small pump to recirculate the water.

First, these work great! The improved design with the little cups underneath (as pictured) is fabulous, and we were excited to see that, as it was unexpected. The nozzles release water without a lot of pressure.

They’re not as easy for the babies as we’d hoped. Our big girls (3-weeks old) seem to have it down without issue. We have a separate brooder with four younger babies (two are 1 week, and two are two weeks). We’ve shown them several times, but they don’t seem to be drinking from them, and will even peck at the water bottle itself. When we do it for them and show them again, they drink everything pooled in the little cups and peck around, but to no avail. We have pushed their beaks to them several times. We installed yesterday, and measured the water levels to check this morning. They’re not getting enough. We’re going to keep showing them and monitoring through today, to give them a chance, but if they don’t get, we’re going to need to change them. I’m already thinking about giving them electrolytes. Just something to be aware of when getting these. Make sure your chicks are getting it before leaving them alone and assuming they have water to drink.

Last thing to note, our package did not come with the promised drill bit. My husband had one, so for us it was fine, but if you don’t, that seems to be a common theme, so be prepared for that.

Pretty annoyed right now. First let me say I have purchased a lot of rent-a-coop products and loved them all until this purchase. I have been looking for a high capacity, clean watering system for my chickens for a while that is also functional during often-sub-zero winters. After going through a bunch of commercial waterers, I decided to switch to horizontal nipples with a stainless steel milk can. The stainless steel can set me back about $100, so I followed the installation directions to the letter. While I only had a few holes to drill and knew I could get the job done with bits I had on hand, I spent an extra $20 on a 11/32 ("recommended") cobalt drill bit. I drilled my holes only to discover this size is inaccurate if you're not using a pliable plastic container. You can see from the picture in my review that inserting the nipple with an 11/32 hole in stainless steel completely stripped the plastic nipple. If I was using a $5 plastic bucket I wouldn't care so much, but I invested a fair amount of money in this project and followed the directions and it is an utter failure. If I insert the nipples just to where it fits on the nipple, it is only inside the can by about 3/16", which makes the washer on the outside utterly ineffective. Tried adding three washers so I could at least get a snug fit. I decided to fill my can with all three different nipple installations and all three leaked like crazy. Thankfully, the holes are too small and not too big, so I guess I can experiment on my milk can and try to find a better fit than stated in the directions, because it's $134 (can, bit, and nipples) in the garbage if I don't. Hoping I can salvage this or I'll be even more annoyed. If I find my way and have luck with these eventually, I will update my review with details and a less annoyed review.

I have rudimentary experiences using a drill, and this was such a breeze to install. Very pleasantly surprised! Instructions were clear, concise, and very cheerfully colored too! From start to finish, 10 minutes max (including 1 mishap - I first tried drilling an old plastic applesauce bottle only to realize the wall is undulating and so the plastic washer won’t maintain a watertight seal. So I scrounged around and found an old salsa container I was using to hold lentils).

It did not leak first try, and hasn’t for the day it’s been in use. I can refill the old salsa container easily without washing every day. I do have to keep the lid on loosely, as the water won’t come out of the drinking cup if there’s an airtight seal up top.

The training instructions were perfect for my three hens: “remove all other water sources. Show one hen, preferably the queen, and she will tell the others.” (My paraphrase) My queen chicken is a little too nervous for me to trust any training I might do with her, so I went with my lowest-ranked but calmest and most curious chicken, and she picked it up immediately. Then she shared w her sister Orpington, and then I knew queen Brahma hen would figure it out quite quick.

I bought these assuming I couldn’t use them in winter (I live in coastal Maine), but they look and feel sturdy enough that I will try it on a metal or heat-resistant plastic container inside a heated dog water bowl. I will update in winter 2019-2020!

Love these for my chickens, it helps conserve water and no leaking!!

Once my chickens learned to use these, they are easy. We had the bigger bowl type ones and they broke and constantly got flipped around when moving their water dish. My husband installed these on a 5 gal bucket. Work great, probably used for 2 summers now.

I like the little drip bowl...good idea. Easy to install.. Training chicks to drink from nipple and they can easily drink from little bowl after they peck the little silver plug. Other nipples drip onto brooder bottom. Its only been a week or so. They havent totally gotten the hang of it yet...seems like their little beaks arent strong enough yet..so the bowl helps.

Easy to install and everything works at it should.

This purchase was used to build water stations for my chickens. My 5 and 7 yr old grands help build it. It was so simple that these kids could do it. The cups out work well. The only thing is drilling the hole has to be precise else the cups seal may eventually leak.
