    Great idea, happy birds

These are a must if you have poultry. So much less messy that other waterers and I feel like much less wasted water as well. They're being used for quail and they work perfectly. These were super easy to install. I used an old square cat litter bucket with a lid for my container. I drilled the holes in one side of the bucket, placed the hole side right up against the hardware cloth of the hutch, screwed the cups into the holes through the wire and it's worked wonderfully. Dropped a couple copper wheat pennies in the bucket to keep it clean and algae free. Plus the lid keeps debris out. So far, so good. If you're on the fence about purchasing, do it.

    Wonderful, but fragile

I've had zero luck with the nipple-type waterers, as my chickens cannot seem to figure them out, and troughs are too messy. These are great. They work exactly as intended, do not make a mess, and the chickens have zero issues using them. But, they are slightly quirky when it comes to placement. First, on my buckets, they sit lower than the bucket, so if I need to remove the bucket off the fence for any reason, I have to remember that I can't set it down or the inserts can move/tilt, and I did have an instance where the bucket began leaking because the insert had cracked the bucket. (Yes, I have a cheap bucket, but I didn't want to use a 5-gallon with thicker walls because of the rate in which my water would turn green)Definitely use the plumber's tape included.Cleaning is not difficult, but sediment *will* get into the little bowls, and one still has to be mindful that it is easy to crack a bucket with these if pushing on them too hard.Overall, these are a great purchase, and I'm so stoked to have found them and making the purchase.(Sorry my pictures are blurry, but my chicks wouldn't stand still)

Great Waterer, But Algae Is Still an Issue

This setup works great and makes keeping fresh water available for my chickens much easier. The cups are a good size, sturdy, and easy to keep clean. My only wish is that there were some way for the system to help prevent algae buildup, especially in the heat. Other than that, I’m very happy with it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    A good idea but…

Wish I would’ve read all the reviews. Good idea just doesn’t really work. I have gone through multiple buckets because we went by the directions and didn’t put them high enough so they don’t bend up and leak. Haven’t found a great way to remove the cup without breaking all my nails. I now have to carry the waterer out of the coop and turn all the cups upside down to remove the water and clean the cups out. The white nuts on all but one have stripped so now I have to put a tray under the bucket to catch all the leaks. I definitely will not be using it in the winter because the water will freeze in the cups. Thinking about putting my heated waterer back in the coop because at least it doesn’t leak.

The Ultimate Automation Upgrade for Happy, Hydrated Chickens!

When we first started raising chickens, I bought a set of these RentACoop auto-fill cups, and they were such a success that I purchased this 4-pack to build an expanded watering system for our newest birds. The beauty of these cups is the complete freedom they give you to build a custom DIY setup using almost any container you like. I personally build mine using 5-gallon buckets, as a single bucket holds enough fresh water to keep our flock hydrated for about a full week. Assembly is simple and foolproof: just follow the included instructions to drill holes near the base of your bucket, slide the auto-fill cups through, and tighten them in place using the provided plastic locking nuts. I now have three separate 5-gallon bucket setups running, and every single one has worked flawlessly without leaks or failures.Depending on your climate, winter weather is something to keep in mind, as any automatic waterer will freeze if temperatures drop below 32 degrees for extended periods. Living here in Texas, our sub-freezing spells rarely last long enough to freeze the main body of water inside the buckets, so all it takes on chilly mornings is pouring a small splash of warm water directly into the cups to thaw the float mechanism out. The only routine maintenance issue you will really encounter is dirt and debris accumulating in the drinking area as the chickens scratch and peck nearby. Thankfully, RentACoop designed these with removable inserts, which makes popping out the dirty liner and rinsing it clean a quick, painless task.At the end of the day, automating routine coop chores makes poultry care so much more enjoyable, and these auto-fill cups take the daily hassle out of watering your flock. Whether you are building your very first coop or expanding your setup for new additions, this 4-pack is an outstanding, reliable investment that I highly recommend.

My hens like the cups better. The only thing is, once you change the original ones out to these, you can't sit the water feeder down on a flat surface. They are okay if you put the water in them while they are hanging. I do like my waterers I purchased. I keep 2 in my run for 8 hens.

Not bad. Inserts are hard for me to remove though.

These are not bad. I like the size and how the water in the bucket stays clean. However, the inserts are too hard to remove to clean making them practically worthless. I actually have to take the whole bucket into the kitchen sink and use a spoon to pry the insert out, then wash everything. Am I doing something wrong? Maybe if the insert had a air vent it would not stick in so badly? I don't know. I still use these, but might switch to nipple waters later. I do have the RentACoop DIY nipple waterers with the tiny cup underneath and I do like those better, but I have 2 of those, I don't have enough for all my chickens. Next time I will get those probably.

A time saving daily water replacement

2 weeks with all 5 in the 5 gallon food grade bucket. No leaks and the girls adapted quickly. Been checking water levels once a week now. Interior Cups need a little finagling to get out for cleaning, but once you get the right angle it gets easier. Good product and only time will tell if the durability is their.

The most durable watering cups you can find!

This is my second time ordering these. The only reason I'm reordering is because one of my old ones finally gave out. I think I've had them almost 3 years. I even had a few extras I gave away to a friend. I didn't even take good care of them. They are super durable!!! I figured I'd go ahead and just order another set. I have them in a 5 gallon bucket. If you're on the fence, go ahead and order them, you won't be disappointed. You won't find quality like these ones anywhere else. I work at Tractor Supply, and I buy these over ours.

    Thankful for extra parts

The watering cups arrived on time. We put them in the watering container (from RentACoop) and came out the next day to discover water all over the ground. One of the cups was defective & had slowly leaked all night. Thankfully, the seller had included a spare cup (& some super cute stickers). We replaced the defective cup & everything has worked great since then. The removable inserts are super easy to clean & put back in, and this watering system is working great for our flock. Overall I'm happy with the purchase, and I would purchase additional items from this seller.

    These are great!

We wanted to start using 5 gallon buckets to have less attention needed for filling and to keep their water cleaner. These work and are great!I initially tried the peck and fill type as my husband got them for me as a gift. I flicked them as the chicken would and did not like how long they took to fill, so I took them back and researched and ordered these. These are great! The cups are a good size, though I wouldn't complain if they came a little bigger. They pop apart into 2 pieces to get a good cleaning with a scrubby and toothbrush. For our warmer months, these are going to be great. I have no complaints so far!Be sure to check and mount them 4+ inches from the bottom of your buckets so you don't have to place the bucket on a platform for the cups to clear the ground. :)

    *Mount higher for better results*

I love these cups. They’re easy to install and easy to clean. I used a 5 gallon bucket and drilled the size holes that the directions suggest about 1” above the bottom of the container (also as instructed). I would recommend drilling the hole a little higher even though it will leave more water “unreachable” inside the container. The reason is that when I carry the bucket to my hose to clean and refill, I need to have a cement block ready or another platform to set the bucket down on so the cups don’t touch the ground. If i tried to put the bucket down on flat ground, the cups would be too low and would have to hold the weight of the whole thing, and would definitely break. So far, I haven't noticed any leakage and the chickens figured out how to drink out of them immediately.

A deal breaker for chicken keepers

I bought this waterer about 3 years ago and omg, it's tough as nails. During the winter I use a heating element and it's awesome. So I had the nipples on it and my new set of chickens could not get the hang of using the nipples, even though my last batch took to them like nobody's business. I guess all chickens are different lol. I replaced the nipples with the cups and they figured it out in about 3 seconds. I love this set up because the water stays clean, I don't have to fill things up all the time, easy. My only comment with the cups, because I started out with them before I got the nipples is in the winter, the water will freeze in them which is a little annoying. This happens even with the heating element in the waterer. It doesn't happen all the time but when you use them in the winter you need to check to make sure your girls have access to water (this was why I switched to the nipples). So what I did before I went out there was fill a container with super hot water to melt them, once I did that they seemed to stay "unfrozen" for the day until the night when the temps dropped really low. That is the only drawback if you can call it that. Otherwise, It's a great setup, easy to use, and saves so much time! I would probably buy both the nipples and the cups, and swap out the cups in the winter (if you can get your girls to learn how to use them). Sometimes they will also freeze if the temps are crazy cold (I live in Colorado) but not like the cups. I would recommend this set up to anybody that has chickens, deal breaker!

Great solution for watering the chickens (just make sure to install a bit higher than one inch)

These have made keeping water for my chickens much easier!!! I no longer need to refill their waterers every day. I installed these on five gallon buckets. And yes they are VERY easy to install. However, the instructions will have you install them about one inch from the bottom of whatever container you choose. I recommend installing about 2 inches from the bottom. If you don’t, the cups will rest on the ground forcing them up which causes them to leak. Also, you will need something to raise them up off the ground or coop floor to keep them from leaking if you don’t install the cups high enough. there are times I just need to place them on the ground or coop floor and I can’t do that. So I have to place the buckets on top of cinderblocks. I will have to purchase more buckets and reinstall these cups higher. But, the cups work great!!! They are durable (I’ve bumped and banged them a few times and they haven’t broken.) they are easy to clean, just rotate them to dump any dirty water and then rotate them back into position and you’re done. I really love that they refill automatically and there’s no water wasted or dumped over daily in the coop. I purchased these for my chickens but my dogs love drinking out of these also, so they could work for dogs also! Great product and I would definitely purchase again.

These things are great when they work right, however, I have had allot of issues with them so far. The main problem I have had, is that they are vulnerable to overfilling and overflowing (and thus draining your bucket altogether). The ones I have use springs that are probably a little too stiff and they commonly fill to 90% or sometimes even higher. This is too high of a level, as the plastic doesn't hold securely enough and the cup can easily rotate, tip, or sag slightly in some fashion, such that the water starts continuously spilling over the brim of the cup.To fix this, I have resorted to putting small rounded stones in the watering cups. The stones have higher density than the water, and thus the extra weight pre-compresses the spring valve mechanism somewhat, thus preventing the cup from filling as high with water. The chickens however like to peck the stones out of the watering cups, so using somewhat larger and rounded stones seems to work better.Additionally, it appears beneficial to secure the cups to your bucket from two separate locations (not just the threaded part alone), so they are less prone to shifting or changing orientation when the birds bump into them with force enough to otherwise shift them. When the unit shifts orientation, it also easily leads to overflowing situations.Due to the problems with the cups overflowing and draining your bucket from time to time, I recommend having a second/redundant watering mechanism in your chicken coop so that your chickens never run out of water, even if one system malfunctions and fails. I also recommend installing a float valve inside the bucket and plumbing the bucket up to the water mains (or a garden hose spigot), so that the chickens always have water, even if a cup malfunctions by overflowing and trying to drain the bucket.
