Healthy Chickens All Summer Long - Part 1

A black and white hen in tall grass in the sunshine.

Seasonal Solutions from RentACoop

At the RentACoop farm, we're extra fond of the longer days of summer, that bring extra sunshine and more quality time with our flock. However, the rising temperatures also bring health and safety challenges such as pests, odors, dehydration, and predators, that can add extra time and effort to our chicken care routines.

Fortunately, RentACoop has the seasonal solutions you’re looking for to address weather-related chicken raising challenges, and ensure happy and healthy chickens all summer long!

In this three-part blog series, we'll share our best tips and ideas, and recommended chicken care supplies for three key areas of focus during the summer months: environment, hydration, and security.

Part 1: Environment

Your flock’s living environment is a critical factor in their warm weather wellness. Chickens cannot sweat to cool themselves down, which makes choosing the right chicken coop supplies essential for their health and well-being.

Providing adequate shade and ventilation in your chicken coop and run, as well as choosing premium RentACoop Hemp Bedding are simple ways to keep your chickens cool and content throughout the summer!

Essentials for a healthy summer environment:

  • Shade and Cover - Chickens love to sunbathe, but when the temperatures are high, they also need access to shaded or covered areas. Free ranging flocks will often spend time in the shade of trees or bushes for a cooler spot to dig and rest. Flocks that are confined to a run or yard also need some cover so they can seek shade during the hottest parts of the day. When raising backyard chickens, it's essential to ensure your chickens have a shady spot, especially on hot summer days.
  • Ventilation - Providing adequate ventilation in your chicken coop, barn, or other enclosure is imperative to ensuring the health and comfort of your flock during the summer months! Airflow reduces the effects of heat and humidity, and helps your chickens cool down, so having windows or doors that open is a plus.* Creating a cross breeze allows heat to escape, and in extreme temperatures, it's also a good idea to set up fans to keep the air moving. Because chickens cannot sweat, they spread their wings to lower their body temperature, and air movement makes a big difference!
*Remember that any opening in a chicken coop or enclosure can pose a safety risk for your flock, especially at nighttime! Stay tuned for Part 3 of this series, where we will discuss security measures for your flock, such as RentACoop's Electric Poultry Fences and Energizers.

RentACoop Hemp Bedding is an excellent choice for several reasons:

    • Natural Insect Repellent Properties – Rising temperatures and increased moisture in the environment brings an increase in insect activity. RentACoop Hemp Bedding naturally repels insects, providing an added layer of protection against mites, flies and other insects that can cause big problems in your coop, and have devastating effects on your chickens’ health.
    • Superior Odor Control – The increased heat and moisture can also exacerbate odors in your chicken coop. Hemp bedding keeps your coop clean and dry, offering superior odor control and keeping the coop smelling fresh and pleasant! RentACoop has perfected the drying process, producing an exceptionally dry premium hemp with superior absorbency.
    • Soft and Comfortable – RentACoop Hemp Bedding is ground smaller, creating a softer surface layer, and making a comfortable and inviting space for your chickens to rest and lay their eggs. This is especially important in the summer months to reduce stress and promote overall well-being. Hemp Bedding is also a beneficial in the brooder when raising chicks.

    • Little to No Dust – High-quality RentACoop Hemp Bedding is extra sifted during the production process for little to no dust. This helps maintain better air quality in your coop, resulting in improved respiratory health for your flock.
    • Hypoallergenic Properties - Unlike some types of shaved wood bedding that can cause skin irritation and respiratory inflammation in both people and animals, RentACoop Hemp Bedding is hypoallergenic. RentACoop Hemp Bedding has fewer particulates that cause allergic reactions, and is an ideal choice for your chickens and your family.
    • Sustainable and Eco-Friendly - Hemp is a fast-growing, naturally pest-resistant, highly sustainable crop. It also composts quickly, benefiting your garden and the planet! RentACoop’s innovative packaging machines achieve maximum compression for both cost and environmental efficiency.
