Welcome to Part 3 of this three-part blog series, where we're sharing our best tips, ideas, and product solutions for three key areas of focus during the summer months: environment, hydration, and security.
Part 3: Security
Security is another year-round chicken challenge, and warmer temperatures bring increased predator activity and increased dangers to your flock. Fortunately, RentACoop has a variety of ideas and innovative solutions to keep your flock safe and secure throughout the summer!
Essential tips to keep your flock safe this summer:
-
Types of local predators - Consider what types of predators are common in your area and the specific ways they may pose a risk to your flock. Are your local predators skilled in digging, flying, chewing, reaching, breaking and entering, or all of the above? Knowing the answer to this question will help you plan how to best secure your enclosures to protect your chickens and other animals.
-
Overhead Protection - Providing shaded or covered areas for your flock is not only important to provide relief from the heat of the summer sun, but also to protect them from overhead predators, such as hawks and other birds of prey. Free ranging chickens should always have access to tree or brush cover, and/or shaded shelter.
-
Coop Security - When building or selecting your coop, it's important to identify and address any potential areas of weakness in both pre-built and DIY chicken coops. Carefully consider the design and materials, and choose locking or latching doors and windows, and sturdy wire.
-
Wire - All openings and gaps in your coop or enclosure should be protected with wire. The size and placement of your wire are important. Half-inch hardware cloth, chicken wire, and wire fencing are all popular options, depending on what types of predators are present in your area, what kinds of animals you have, and what level of protection you need.
-
Regular Inspections and Maintenance - Coops and fences that are exposed to the elements need to be inspected regularly to ensure they are free of any holes, gaps, interference, or weak spots. Periodic maintenance of outdoor living spaces helps to keep your flock safe and secure!
