Understanding Chicken Behavior and Communication
📣🐔 Chickens talk... and they are surprisingly expressive! But do you know what they’re saying?
Chickens use many different sounds to communicate. Whether they are alerting each other to danger, laying an egg, finding a snack, establishing territory, or just saying hello, each vocalization has a purpose.
Understanding the sounds your chickens make can help you interpret their behavior, recognize concerns, and keep your flock happy, healthy, and safe. In this blog, our EGGsperts will squawk about some of the most common chicken noises and what they mean.
Let’s get clucking! 🐓❤️
The Classic Cluck - Soft, rhythmic, happy.
👂 Bawk-bawk, bok-bok, buk, cuk.
💬 Clucking is normal chicken chatter and indicates contentment. 😌 Chickens often cluck softly while foraging, dust bathing, or exploring. Clucking is a sign your flock feels safe and satisfied.
The Mighty Squawk - Sharp, loud, and sudden.
👂 Skwaaaawk, bwaaaak!
💬 Squawking means that something isn't right, and can indicate surprise, fear, or irritation. It might happen if a chicken is startled, pecked, or jostled.
⚠️ Alert: If you hear a chorus of squawks coming from your coop, check for bullying, predators, or environmental stress.
The Famous Egg Song – Loud, repetitive, celebratory.
👂 bawk-bawk-bawk-bawk-baaaaawk-BA-GAWK...!
💬 The Egg Song means that a hen is laying, or just laid, an egg! 🥚🎶 It’s one of the most recognizable chicken sounds, happening multiple times a day and lasting several seconds to a few minutes. The Egg Song often triggers a chorus from other hens, and it can get LOUD! 🔊
The Soothing Trill – Soft, sweet, calm.
👂 brbrbrbrbrbr, prrrrrrrrr
💬 Trilling is a sign of comfort and calm. 😊 You’re most likely to hear it when chickens are relaxing together, or being gently held and petted. Mother hens also trill when communicating to their chicks. 🐥
The Annoyed Growl – Low, angry, rumbling.
👂 grdrdrdrd
💬 Growling is a warning sound that means BACK OFF! ⚠️ It’s a sign that you’re too close to something your chicken wants to protect – most likely her eggs, her chicks, or her territory. 🐣
✨ Pro tip: Respect the growl and give your chicken some personal space OR prepare to be pecked. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
The Alarm Call – Frantic, sharp, high-pitched.
👂 SQUAAAWK, BAWK-BAWK SQUAAAWK!
💬 The Alarm Call means EMERGENCY! 🚨 DANGER IS NEAR!! 🚨 This panicked sound indicates that your flock is in distress, and it is often accompanied by your flock rushing to hide in a safe spot. Although sometimes it ends up being a false alarm, it’s important to recognize this vocalization and act fast. 👀 Look up and around for both aerial and ground predators. Your chickens are your best security system!
The Proud Crow – Loud, bold, distinctive.
👂 “Cock-a-doodle-doo” (What does YOUR rooster’s crow sound like?)
💬 Crowing means good morning, of course! ☀️ Or good afternoon... Or good evening? Or hey, how you doin’? Those of us who have a rooster in our flock know, this sound is NOT just for sunrise. Roosters crow to mark their territory, assert dominance, or to signal routines or sudden changes. (Or just because they feel like it.)
✅ Fun Fact: Hens can crow too! Did you know? It’s true, and not at all uncommon.
The Most Endearing Rooster Sound - Tidbitting – Soft, rapid, upbeat.
👂 gadataga gadataga, gog-gog-gog
Tidbitting is a sound a rooster makes to call his flock and show them that he’s found a snack. 🌽 This vocalization is usually accompanied by pecking the ground and picking up and dropping small pieces of whatever food he’s found. ❤️
From the cheerful chatter in your chicken coop to the loud squawks coming from your backyard, chicken speak is more than just noise; it’s communication. Learning what different chicken sounds mean helps us understand and respond to their needs. Now, let the conversation be-GAWK!
Clucks & kisses,
