Build Your Own Hatching Program

Go Big or Go Little?

Trying to decide between the Big Red Barn and the Little Red Barn? Here are some questions to help with your decision:

• How many do you want to hatch? Given an average hatch rate of 50%, you are likely to hatch 4 chicks with the Little Red Barn, and 6 chicks with the Big Red Barn

• How big is your table space? The foot print of the Little red barn is 23”x30”. The footprint of the Big Red Barn is 23” x 48”.

• Will you want to transport the brooder? The Little Red barn fits in the back set of a mid-sized sedan leaving room for a car seat. The Big Red Barn can fit in the backseat of a car, but will take up the entire back seat.

FAQ

Find the answers to your frequently asked questions here!

• Q: Will all the chicks hatch?
A: Generally not all chicks will hatch. The average hatch rate for fertilized eggs received by mail is 50%

• Q: If I’m running the program at school, what do I do with the chickens when we are done with the program?
A: There are many options, including allowing families to take them home, rehoming them to a neighborhood farm, or placing them into homes with your local Humane Society. Every community is different, and our Egg-sperts are always available to help you to find the best solution! Also, some schools choose to keep chickens in a coop on the schools campus. There are wonderful opportunity to use them for instructional purposes, to teach children how to care and feed for chickens, to share the fun of collecting eggs, and even to use their used bedding as an addition to your compost!

• Q: Can I leave the eggs and chicks alone over the weekend?
A: Absolutely. The incubator comes with an App so that you can always be sure the eggs are maintained at the optimal temperature and humidity. The Red Barns come with feeders and waterers which will contain sufficient feed and water over the weekend.
